Isaac’s Sleep Routine

I usually only post little snippets of things that Isaac says, but I read a blog post on baby sleep and I thought I would post what I did because, although I have gotten a ton of things wrong as a mother- this routine worked out really well for us.

The first couple of nights after I brought Isaac home I tried to co-sleep, and I couldn’t get him to sleep at all. Then for the next couple of nights he slept in his vibrating chair, which really concerned me because I felt like it wasn’t comfortable or natural.

So then we started swaddling him in one of those swaddle blankets with the patches, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007XL658K/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1403465458&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40 like this. At that time I “co-slept” with him in my bed but inside of this thing, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00012CHFI/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1403465597&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40. This worked really well for a while and then I moved him inside this thing, still swaddled, into a bassinet beside my bed like this, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000HKY1GM/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1403465688&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70. And then, eventually I moved him into his crib in his room in the little sleeper thing, still swaddled, and on d he got comfortable in his room I removed the sleeper thing and just swaddled him in his crib. And Isaac did really great with this and has always been a great night sleeper.

He also did really well with naps for most of his life, but now that he is 3.5 is giving up his naps, which is frustrating but perfectly normal I guess. I also used this blanket thing to keep him warm after I stopped swaddling him, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000ALFVQ2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1403465960&sr=8-3&pi=SY200_QL40, and they even make them with the feet sticking out for older toddlers and we used one until he turned 3.

So anyway- if you have a new baby and are trying to figure out the sleep thing- these are my suggestions.

Wiping the cry away

Today Isaac is at home with me, it’s a rainy Memorial Day and he was playing in the guest bedroom with a broken ride-on motorcycle and the treadmill. Then he fell. I didn’t see him fall because, like a great mom, I was reading my phone, but anyway…

After crying for a while in my arms he pulled back and started wiping at his eyes and said, “I’m trying to wipe the cry away.”

Preschool Adventures

In the car on the way home from preschool, I asked my son, “How was music class today.”

“Mr. Mark said, ‘Isaac, don’t sit on Elliot,” he replied.

Being Jewish

Isaac goes to a Jewish preschool although we are not Jewish. The other day the teacher asked each student whether or not they are Jewish and wrote down the answers. Isaac’s answer, “No, but this truck is Jewish.”

Funny

If Isaac sees a clown in a book. He says, “I don’t want that clown to be funny to me!”

Best

“Isaac, you are the best.”
“No, I’m not the best.”
“Really, you’re not the best?”
“Well, I’m a little the best.”

Stinky

Yesterday I had to make a Skype phone call to a business associate in the UK.

It was early in the morning and so I did it from home, and Isaac was with me.

As soon as he heard me on the phone he ran into my office and started listening into the phone call. He started calling the man, whose name is Stephen, David. So I corrected him and said his name was Stephen, but for some reason Isaac misheard me and thought I said Stinky.

So then he started saying, “Hey Stinky, how are you doing Stinky?”

Soccer!

Isaac had his first soccer practice today.

“How was soccer?” I asked.

“Soccer was fun, I got to kick the ball and I kicked it into the net. And I kicked a pebble and then kicked the ball and then kicked the ball and the pebble,” Isaac added, “and I also got to sit on the ball.”

“That sounds great!” I cheered, “Do you want to buy a soccer ball and practice outside?”

“Can we sit on it?” he asked.

Summer

The other day Isaac and I played outside.

It was sunny out but windy.

Isaac said, “I’m a little bit cold here, I want to stand in the summer.”
